Martin Drew and the New Couriers

May 10th will see one of the major highlights of the year for Harborough Jazz when we welcome drummer Martin Drew and the New Couriers. This all star quintet recalls and plays the music of the original Jazz Couriers which was  led by legendary saxophonists Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott.  The line up is:

Martin Drew (Drums)

Martin Drew is arguably one of the top UK Jazz drummers and had a very long association with both Ronnie Scott and Oscar Peterson and explained on Martin’s Website:

He played with the late, great Ronnie Scott for twenty years, from 1975 to 1995.  Over the years, with Oscar Peterson, Ronnie's various bands, and numerous other groups, Martin has performed engagements at Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Centre in the USA; Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, 606 Club, Ronnie Scott's Club, Mozart House in London; Blue Note Jazz Clubs in New York and Japan; Sydney Opera House in Australia; La Scala in Milan; Salle Pleyelle, Palais de Congress in Paris,  and many more prestigious clubs and concert halls. From 1974 until 2004, Martin toured and recorded in Canada, the USA, South America, Japan, Australia, Europe, and all over the world, with the legendary piano genius, Oscar Peterson, sharing the stage at various times with Joe Pass, Niels Pedersen, Ray Brown, Ulf Wakenius, Herb Ellis, Clark Terry, Ella Fitzgerald, and many legends of the jazz world.

Paul Morgan (Bass)

1979-82, BBC Radio Orchestra (principal bass), working mainly with the big band. Don Lusher Big Band 1986 to date. Grew up accompanying visiting Americans at the Concorde Club, went on to work with the likes of Zoot Sims. Peggy Lee and Ronnie Scott. Now mainly playing legitimate bass in film and TV, studios. Mornington Lockett (Sax)

As a member of the Ronnie Scott Sextet, Mornington worked extensively in Britain and abroad. Jim Hart (Vibes)

One of the most in demand musicians on the London scene on Drums, Vibes

and Piano, he now plays regularly with Martin Drew's New Jazz Couriers, Stan

Sulzmann, Gwilym Simcock, Alan Barnes, Paul Clarvis and The Matt Wates

sextet to name just a few, as well as leading two groups of his own. He has

also played with Shaun Escoffery, The Herbaliser, Franco Ambrosetti, The

Steve Melling (Piano)

Steve Melling began playing jazz professionally in the late 1970s when he left the National Youth Jazz Orchestra after playing with them for three years which included tours of Australia and Turkey. In 1986 he received the first Pat Smythe Memorial Trust Award, for exceptionally promising pianist. He worked with Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia (1986-7), and in 1987 and 1989 toured the Far East with the Clark Tracey Quintet, and played on three of the group's albums. He worked with Tim Whitehead's band (1988-9), and recorded the album 'Decision' with him. Mellling also recorded 'East to West' with Alan Skidmore, and played on the title track of Skidmore's ballad album 'After the Rain'. Having worked and recorded with Claire Martin and with Peter King's quartet and quintet, in 1996 Melling recorded his own album Trio Duo Solo. He has played with American stars including Elvin Jones's Jazz Machine, and has performed two-piano duos with Stan Tracey.
